Microsoft is currently piloting an innovative feature for Windows 11 that enables users to resume Android apps directly on their PCs, with Spotify leading the charge as the first supported application. This functionality is being rolled out to Windows Insiders in both the Dev and Beta Channels, marking a significant step towards enhancing cross-device usability.
Participants in the testing phase can link their Android phones to their PCs and initiate a song through the Spotify mobile app. Upon doing so, a notification will appear on the Windows 11 interface, labeled “Resume from your phone,” accompanied by the Spotify icon and a prompt to “Continue on this PC.” By selecting this notification, users can seamlessly transition to the Spotify desktop app, or they will be directed to install it if it is not already present, allowing the music to continue playing without interruption.
This feature was initially showcased in a now-removed Build 2025 demo, underscoring Microsoft’s ambition to forge stronger connections between mobile devices and Windows PCs.
A step towards cross-device continuity
The functionality bears resemblance to Apple’s Handoff, which facilitates the continuation of activities across its ecosystem of devices, including Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches. While Microsoft has yet to disclose a timeline or specifics regarding additional app integrations, this initiative signals a commitment to enhancing the synergy between Android devices and Windows PCs.
