ReactOS Celebrates 30 Years with Significant Progress Towards Windows Compatibility
The ReactOS free software project is marking its 30th anniversary this year, continuing its ambitious journey to create an “open-source Windows” operating system. This milestone is underscored by a recent announcement from the developers regarding a significant advancement in their compatibility with Windows NT 6.0.
After months of diligent preparation, the ReactOS team has successfully synchronized their implementation of the Microsoft C Runtime library (MSVCRT) with the state of Wine 10.0. This DLL is crucial for the functionality of many applications that rely on Microsoft’s runtime environment.
In a recent update shared on X, the developers highlighted that this integration has led to a remarkable 30% reduction in API test failures, alongside enhanced support for various applications. They expressed their excitement, stating, “Another major step for NT6 compatibility bringup achieved!!!“
The rebase process, which has been in development for several months, was detailed in a comprehensive merge request. As a result of this effort, approximately 7,574 out of 25,517 test failures have been addressed, translating to a notable 29.6% improvement in overall stability.
As ReactOS continues to evolve, the anticipation for what the project can accomplish by 2026 is palpable within the open-source community. The strides made thus far signal a promising future for this innovative initiative.
