RIP Windows 10? Microsoft tries ‘ultimate’ tactic to get you using Windows 11

As the countdown to the end of free support for Windows 10 accelerates, Microsoft is intensifying its efforts to encourage users to transition to Windows 11. With less than a year remaining until support ceases on October 14, 2025, the tech giant has introduced a series of full-screen alerts on Windows 10 devices, compelling users to consider the benefits of upgrading.

New Alerts and Upgrading Options

These prominent notifications, which began appearing last week, convey a clear message: “Do more with a new Windows PC. With support for Windows 10 ending on October 14, 2025, rest assured we have you covered.” The alerts emphasize that Windows 11 simplifies the migration of favorite files and applications, while also promising improved battery life, faster web browsing, and enhanced security features.

In conjunction with these alerts, Microsoft is promoting the purchase of new devices optimized for Windows 11. The message is clear: “Want the ultimate Windows 11 experience? Level up to the new Copilot + PCs—the fastest, most intelligent Windows PCs ever.” However, this upgrade comes at a price, with Microsoft’s latest AI-powered Copilot+ laptops starting at £899.

For those hesitant to invest in a new device, Microsoft has announced an extension of Windows 10 support for a fee. Users can opt for a paid program that offers “Critical and Important security updates” for (£24) per year. Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President and Consumer Chief Marketing Officer at Windows, explained, “We understand that some of you may require additional time while moving to a new Windows 11 PC or Copilot+ PC. During this period, you may wish to take steps to help secure your existing PC.”

This new Extended Security Update (ESU) program, available for personal use for the first time, will allow users to maintain a level of security on their existing systems. However, it is important to note that the ESU program will only provide critical updates, with no new features or enhancements. Microsoft has made it clear that while this option may be appealing, transitioning to Windows 11 remains the most advantageous choice for most users, as ESUs will not include new features or technical support.

As the deadline approaches, the question remains: will you make the switch to Windows 11, or will you opt for the extended support for Windows 10? The decision lies in your hands as the clock ticks down to October 2025.
