Following the recent launch of Windows 11 24H2, the tech landscape is witnessing a significant shift as Microsoft rolls out final updates for several earlier versions of its operating system. For users still operating on Windows 11 22H2, the implications are clear: security updates will cease, marking the end of support for these versions.
End of Service Implications
The end-of-service announcement affects a variety of Windows 11 editions, including:

- Windows 11 Pro Education
- Windows 11 Pro for Workstations
- Windows 11 SE
- Windows 11 21H2 Enterprise
- Windows 11 21H2 Education

With these editions now at the end of their service life, users are left to ponder the potential risks of remaining on unsupported software.
In the release notes for KB5044285, issued during October’s Patch Tuesday, Microsoft explicitly stated: “Home and Pro editions of Windows 11, version 22H2 are at end of service today, October 8, 2024. They will no longer receive any updates. To continue receiving security and non-security updates after October 8, 2024, we recommend that you update to the latest version of Windows.”
Recognizing the importance of staying updated, Microsoft has been advocating for users to transition to newer versions. The company has even adopted a somewhat contentious approach to ensure compliance, implementing a system of automatic upgrades for devices not managed by IT departments.
The October 2024 security update is the last update available for these editions. After today, devices running these editions will no longer receive monthly security and preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats. To help keep you protected and productive, Windows Update will automatically initiate a feature update for Windows 11 Home and Pro devices that are not managed by IT departments when these are nearing end of servicing.
For those who prefer to take control of their upgrade path, it is indeed possible to manually check for updates to transition to Windows 11 24H2 ahead of the automatic rollout. However, users are advised to remain vigilant regarding known issues associated with this update, as it is not without its challenges.
