The Windows 11 24H2 update is no longer blocked on these PCs

In a recent development, Microsoft has lifted the safeguard hold on the Windows 11 24H2 update for certain PCs that were previously affected by compatibility issues. This decision comes after users experienced disruptions with various USB scanners and devices equipped with scanning capabilities following the update. The initial block was a precautionary measure to prevent further complications for users relying on these devices.

Resolution of Compatibility Issues

The core of the problem stemmed from the inability of devices supporting the eSCL protocol to switch to USB mode, rendering them unrecognizable and unusable for scanning and other functionalities. Affected devices included not only scanners but also multifunction printers, fax machines, modems, and other eSCL network devices.

To address this, Microsoft had paused the rollout of the 24H2 update for impacted systems and advised against manual installations. However, with the release of the KB5048667 cumulative update on December 10, 2024, the company has resolved the underlying issues.

“This issue was resolved by Windows updates released December 10, 2024 (KB5048667), and later. We recommend you install the latest security update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one. The safeguard hold (ID 54762729) that was previously in place for this issue will be lifted in the coming days. Note that, once you install the Windows update addressing this issue, it may take up to 48 hours for the Windows 11, version 24H2 update to be offered via Windows Update. Restarting your device might expedite the process.”

For users whose Windows 11 systems were previously blocked from the 24H2 update, the path is now clear. They can expect to receive the update within the next two days, or they can choose to restart their PCs to potentially accelerate the process.

This news arrives as a welcome relief for Windows 11 users, especially as the year draws to a close. 2024 has presented its share of challenges for Microsoft, marked by various controversies. However, this update, along with the recent allowance for Windows 11 installations on older PCs, signals a positive shift that may enhance user experience moving forward.
