There’s AI Inside Windows Paint and Notepad Now. Here’s How to Use It

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, companies are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into their software offerings. This trend is particularly evident in the latest updates to Windows applications, where even the most traditional tools like Paint and Notepad are receiving AI enhancements. These upgrades reflect the dual focus of the generative AI revolution: image and text generation.

AI in Windows Paint

Windows Paint, long known for its simplicity in image creation and editing, has embraced AI with the introduction of a Copilot button. This feature unlocks three innovative options:

  • Image Creator: Users can generate new images by entering descriptive prompts. Whether envisioning a giraffe lounging on a beach or a pineapple-shaped spaceship, the detail in the prompt enhances the accuracy of the generated image. After crafting your description, you can select an image style and click Create to see the AI-generated thumbnails.
  • Generative Erase: This tool allows users to remove unwanted elements from their images. By selecting objects to erase and adjusting the brush size, users can seamlessly eliminate distractions, such as a pole obstructing a picturesque view. Once satisfied with the selection, clicking Apply prompts Paint to fill in the background using surrounding pixels.
  • Remove Background: This straightforward feature isolates the main subject of an image by turning the background white. While it excels with clear subjects, it can significantly reduce manual editing time.

While Generative Erase and Remove Background are available at no cost, users will need AI credits for the Image Creator feature. These credits are bundled with Microsoft 365 or Copilot Pro subscriptions, encouraging thoughtful usage.

AI in Windows Notepad

Notepad, traditionally recognized as a code editor, has evolved to include formatting and auto-save features, now complemented by a Copilot button. Unlike its counterpart in Paint, Copilot in Notepad does not generate new text. Instead, it assists users in refining existing content.

To utilize this feature, users must first input text into Notepad and select it. Upon clicking the Copilot button, a variety of options become available:

  • Make shorter and Make longer: These options allow users to adjust the length of their selected text.
  • Change tone: This feature enables users to modify the text’s tone, making it more inspirational, formal, casual, or humorous.
  • Change format: Users can restructure their text into lists, marketing language, or even poetry.
  • Rewrite: For a more comprehensive transformation, this option provides previews of rewritten text, allowing users to select from various variations before replacing the original content.

Currently, Notepad offers a limited number of AI-powered rewrites for free. However, extensive use of these features will also require AI credits associated with a Microsoft 365 or Copilot Pro subscription. For those who prefer a distraction-free environment, the Copilot button can be disabled through the settings menu.
