This new Microsoft Photos update may make Copilot+ actually useful

If you are among the fortunate users of a Copilot+ device, the anticipation of exploring new AI capabilities is palpable. Microsoft has recently introduced a noteworthy enhancement to its offerings, unveiling a “super resolution” feature that promises to elevate the quality of images significantly. This feature, now available to those on the preview channels, harnesses the power of the device’s Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to refine and enlarge images seamlessly.

New Features for Enhanced Image Quality

According to the Windows Insider blog, the super resolution technology utilizes artificial intelligence to magnify images up to eight times their original size. This innovation is particularly beneficial for users looking to improve the clarity of low-resolution photos, prepare images for large-scale prints, or crop tightly while maintaining high resolution.

Super resolution is perfect for enhancing low-quality photos, ensuring that you can zoom in on the details without sacrificing clarity.

In addition to the super resolution feature, Microsoft has also integrated Optical Character Recognition (OCR) into its Photos application. This functionality allows users to scan images for text, converting it into a format that can be easily copied and pasted. This is especially useful for extracting information from documents without the tedious task of manual transcription.

Importantly, all processing occurs locally on the device, ensuring user privacy by eliminating concerns about data being transmitted to third-party servers. This local processing capability not only enhances security but also streamlines the user experience.

To access these innovative features, users must enroll in the Insider build program for their Copilot+ devices. Following enrollment, updating the Photos app to version 2024.11100.17007.0 or higher via the Microsoft Store will unlock these new functionalities, allowing users to fully leverage the advancements in image processing and text extraction.
