WD releases SDD firmware fix after Windows 11 24H2 BSODs

Microsoft is currently investigating reports concerning specific Western Digital SSDs that are causing issues for users of Windows 11 24H2 on various devices. The initial discovery of this problem was highlighted by WindowsLatest.com, which led to a detailed discussion thread on the Western Digital forums, where users have been sharing their experiences and troubleshooting efforts.

Investigation and Response

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to The Register that the company is aware of the complaints and is actively looking into the matter. However, as of now, this glitch has not been officially listed among the known issues associated with Windows 11 24H2.

Users have reported that their previously stable systems have encountered severe disruptions, including Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors, following the installation of the update. This suggests a direct correlation with the Windows 11 24H2 rollout.

While Microsoft has yet to clarify whether it will implement a block on the affected hardware during its investigation, Western Digital has acknowledged the existence of the problem. In a positive turn of events, the company has released a patch designed to address the issue.

The update specifically “addresses an issue with the HMB (Host Memory Buffer) for certain models of Western Digital and SanDisk SSDs, where the drive may cause a BSOD on Windows 11 24H2.” The impacted NVMe SSDs include:

  • WD_BLACK SN770
  • WD_BLACK SN770M
  • WD Blue SN580
  • WD Blue SN5000
  • SanDisk Extreme M.2

All of these devices are 2TB models. Western Digital has also issued a cautionary note indicating that “Microsoft may prevent systems with affected models from upgrading to Windows 11 24H2 until the firmware is updated.”

As challenges continue to mount for Windows 11 24H2, users are left to ponder the stability of the operating system. Following an initial rollout that seemed to proceed smoothly, various bugs have begun to surface. Earlier this week, Microsoft acknowledged a reporting error in the Disk Cleanup tool, which, while less critical than a BSOD, has nonetheless shaken user confidence.

Moreover, Windows 11 24H2 has already been associated with several known issues, including complications with fingerprint sensors and compatibility problems with Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers. With the recent addition of incorrect space reporting from the Disk Cleanup tool, users contemplating the updated operating system may understandably be left wondering, “What next?”
