Windows 11 Update Brings New Challenges for Some Users
In the latest chapter of Windows 11 updates, Microsoft has rolled out the KB5055523 update, addressing a range of issues while inadvertently introducing a new challenge for a select group of users. Specifically, those utilizing System Guard Secure Launch or Dynamic Root of Trust for Measurement may find themselves facing difficulties with Windows Hello authentication.
The impact of this issue, though confined to a narrow user base, is noteworthy. Affected individuals may encounter significant hurdles when attempting to access their Windows services through facial recognition or PIN. Microsoft has acknowledged the situation in the release notes, stating, “We’re aware of an edge case of Windows Hello issue affecting devices with specific security features enabled.”
After installing this update and performing a Push button reset or Reset this PC from Settings > System > Recovery and selecting Keep my Files and Local install, some users might be unable to login to their Windows services using Windows Hello facial recognition or PIN. Users might observe a Windows Hello Message saying “Something happened and your PIN isn’t available. Click to set up your PIN again” or “Sorry something went wrong with face setup”.
Microsoft clarifies that the issue is limited to devices where System Guard Secure Launch or Dynamic Root of Trust for Measurement features are enabled post-update. Devices that had these features activated prior to the update, or those with them disabled, remain unaffected.
Fortunately, there is a straightforward workaround for those experiencing issues. Users can re-enroll in Windows Hello to restore access. For facial recognition, navigate to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Facial recognition (Windows Hello), select Set up, and follow the prompts. Alternatively, for those who prefer using a PIN, simply follow the Set my PIN prompt on the logon screen to re-establish access.
