Beginning October 14, 2025, Microsoft will officially cease support for most versions of Windows 10. In light of this significant change, the Ohio University Office of Information Technology (OIT) has announced plans to restrict access for OHIO-managed systems that continue to operate on unsupported Windows versions.
Why this matters
The discontinuation of support for these devices means they will no longer receive essential security patches, which poses a considerable risk to both personal and institutional data. By blocking access to outdated devices, the OIT aims to mitigate the potential for data breaches, safeguard vital research and student records, and maintain compliance with both University and cybersecurity industry standards.
What you should do
This decision affects all versions of Windows 10 prior to version 22H2, the earliest version eligible for Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program. The ESU program allows for paid access to critical security updates for older operating systems after official support has ended.
- It is important to note that ESU licenses come with a cost, which will be charged to the associated planning unit.
- While the ESU can provide temporary support for version 22H2 and above, it should not be viewed as a long-term solution.
- The OIT plans to begin restricting access for all Windows 10 systems, including those with ESU, as early as October 2026, and no later than October 2028, when the ESU program concludes.
