As the deadline approaches for Windows 10 Home and Pro to cease receiving free security updates in October 2025, users are faced with critical decisions regarding their operating systems. The urgency of this situation prompts a careful consideration of three tailored recommendations, each designed to suit different needs and circumstances.
How to choose:
- Do you currently use (or plan to use) any Windows-dependent software? Fortunately, many excellent alternatives exist that operate on other systems or in the cloud. For instance, Descript now offers cloud functionality, and DaVinci Resolve is compatible with Linux CentOS 7.3 or Rocky Linux 8.6. If your work does not rely on Windows-specific software, Solution 1 may be your best option.
- Is your Windows-dependent software optimized for Windows 10? If you find yourself using an older version of software like QuickBooks, Solution 2 could be more appropriate for you.
- Does any of your specialized software necessitate Windows 11? While it’s rare, some applications may only run on the latest version. If you have a personal inclination to explore Windows 11, even if your hardware is not fully compliant, consider Solution 3.
Solution 1: Schleswig-Holstein-Germany’s choice!
In a bold move, the state of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany has banned all Microsoft products and services in government offices due to concerns over privacy and espionage. If you do not require Microsoft desktop software, transitioning to a Linux distribution such as Linux Mint, Linux CentOS 7.3, or Rocky Linux 8.6 could be a viable path. Pair this with LibreOffice instead of Microsoft 365, or utilize Microsoft’s cloud applications exclusively. The conversion process involves backing up your data, wiping your drive, and installing the Linux operating system.
Solution 2: Safely stay with Windows 10 until 2032!
If you prefer to remain with Windows 10 without upgrading your hardware, you can upgrade to Windows 10 IoT for continued security updates until January 2032. Although Microsoft keeps Windows IoT somewhat obscure, it is possible to obtain a legal OEM license for under US. This option does not include retail tech support but is entirely legitimate. Upon activation, you will receive Microsoft’s official confirmation. Transitioning from standard Windows 10 to Windows 10 IoT typically requires a clean install, but for clients who prefer a more hands-on approach, I can assist with the migration without the need to wipe the drive first.
Solution 3: Go palindromic!
If you are drawn to the technical advantages or simply the novelty of Windows 11, migrating to Windows 11 IoT is an option worth considering. This version is less bloated and intrusive compared to its Home or Pro counterparts. A legal OEM license for Windows 11 IoT can be acquired for under US. Like its predecessor, this license does not come with retail tech support but is valid. Activation will also yield Microsoft’s official endorsement. However, it’s important to note that Windows 11 IoT will only receive free security updates until October 2029, which is less favorable than the January 2032 cutoff for Windows 10 IoT. Fortunately, Windows 11 IoT is compatible with older hardware than what is required for Windows 11 Home or Pro. Similar to the previous solutions, transitioning to Windows 11 IoT involves a clean install, but I am available to facilitate this process for clients without the need for a complete wipe.
