Windows 11 24H2 comes with an added dose of problems

Microsoft is in the process of rolling out Windows 11 24H2 to its user base, yet this latest update is accompanied by a series of hardware and software challenges that complicate the installation experience. The root of these issues lies in the stringent hardware and software prerequisites set by the tech giant for the new operating system.

While Windows 11 24H2 promises a host of new features, the specific requirements for hardware and software can dampen the excitement. To mitigate potential problems, Microsoft has implemented several ‘compatibility holds’ that temporarily prevent users from installing the update until their systems meet the necessary criteria.

These holds are designed to protect users from a range of issues that could arise during installation, including system crashes, performance degradation, and unexpected behavior such as unresponsive PCs and laptops.

List of problems

According to recent reports from Bleeping Computer, certain devices, particularly those from ASUS, are experiencing significant difficulties. The budget-friendly X415KA and X515KA laptop models are notably impacted, with some users encountering the dreaded ‘blue screen of death’ during the update process.

In response to these complications, ASUS has acknowledged the situation, prompting Microsoft to halt the direct rollout of the update for these specific devices. Users will only see the update available after they have installed a firmware update from ASUS, either through Windows Update or the manufacturer’s own application.

Problems with applications

In addition to hardware concerns, various applications have also contributed to the update’s complications, leading Microsoft to pause the rollout. Notable offenders include:

  • Voicemeeter application, which can trigger a blue screen of death.
  • Version 3.7 and earlier of the Safe Exam Browser, designed for secure exam environments.
  • Custom wallpaper applications.
  • The game Asphalt 8.
  • Easy Anti-Cheat software, particularly problematic on devices equipped with Intel Alder Lake+ processors and Intel vPro technology.

Many of these applications rely on outdated drivers, and users are advised to install the latest game or driver updates to facilitate a smoother transition to Windows 11 24H2.

Cameras, fingerprint sensors, Intel SST

Further complicating matters are issues related to facial recognition features for Windows Hello and camera functionalities in third-party applications. Users have reported that built-in cameras may cease to function post-update, and similar problems have been noted with fingerprint sensors.

Microsoft has also paused updates related to these functionalities, although the extent of the impact remains unclear. Firmware updates may be necessary to resolve these issues.

Lastly, devices utilizing Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) are facing their own set of challenges. Specifically, driver versions 10.29.0.5152 and 10.30.0.5152 have been linked to blue screen errors following the update to Windows 11 24H2. A potential remedy involves updating to driver versions 10.30.00.5714, 10.29.00.5714, or later.
