Windows 11 24H2 emergency update fixes Easy Anti-Cheat BSOD issue

Microsoft has swiftly responded to a pressing issue affecting Windows 11 users with the release of an emergency update, designated as KB5063060. This out-of-band update aims to rectify a compatibility problem that has been causing unexpected restarts accompanied by the infamous blue screen of death (BSOD) errors, particularly on systems utilizing Easy Anti-Cheat.

Details of the Update

The update is a revised iteration of the earlier cumulative update, KB5060842, which was rolled out during this month’s Patch Tuesday. Following numerous reports from users experiencing system reboots and encountering IRQLNOTLESSOREQUAL BSODs linked to ntoskrnl.exe or EasyAntiCheat_EOS.exe, Microsoft took decisive action.

Initially, the company did not disclose specific hardware or software configurations that were affected by the previous update, leaving many users in the dark regarding the implications of KB5060842 on their systems. However, just a day later, Microsoft clarified that the issues were confined to devices running Easy Anti-Cheat, a widely used anti-cheating service integrated into a multitude of popular multiplayer games such as Fortnite, Apex Legends, and ELDEN RING.

In their announcement, Microsoft stated, “This update addresses an incompatibility issue where Windows might restart unexpectedly when opening games that use the Easy Anti-Cheat service.” The update is designed to download and install automatically via Windows Update and Microsoft Update on devices that have Easy Anti-Cheat installed, as well as on those that have not yet applied KB5060842.

Manual Installation Options

For users unable to install the KB5063060 update through Windows Update, Microsoft has provided the option for manual installation on x64 and arm64 systems. Users can download the update directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Furthermore, in October, Microsoft implemented a compatibility hold to prevent Windows 24H2 upgrades on Intel Alder Lake+ and vPro systems due to known issues that could lead to Easy Anti-Cheat-related blue screens with “MEMORY_MANAGEMENT” errors.

Security Updates Released

On the same day, Microsoft also issued security updates, including KB5060842 and KB5060999, addressing a total of 66 vulnerabilities in Windows 11. Among these were critical flaws, including a publicly disclosed Windows SMB privilege escalation vulnerability (CVE-2025-33073) and an actively exploited zero-day vulnerability in Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) (CVE-2025-33053).

The updates released in July 2025 Patch Tuesday tackled ten critical vulnerabilities, with eight of them allowing attackers to execute remote code on unpatched devices, while the remaining two provided avenues for privilege escalation.
