Performance Challenges with New Surface Devices
Last month, Microsoft introduced the Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8, both positioned as more budget-friendly options starting at 9. These new models come equipped with lower-end specifications compared to their premium counterparts, featuring an older Snapdragon chipset and a modest 8GB of RAM instead of the previously standard 16GB.
As reviews begin to surface, it appears that the decision to limit memory to 8GB may not align with the demands of Windows 11. According to a report from The Verge, while the device performs adequately for basic tasks such as web browsing, text editing, and streaming videos, it falters significantly during more demanding activities. Users reported that the laptop would hang or freeze for several seconds when joining video calls on Microsoft Teams, even when no intensive applications were running in the background.
The review highlighted that with only about 10 Chrome tabs open, alongside Slack and Signal, the laptop struggled to maintain a stable performance. Instances of freezing were noted multiple times throughout the day while working in Google Docs, indicating that the device’s limitations extend beyond just video conferencing.
Windows Task Manager revealed that the device was utilizing approximately 6.7GB of its available 7.6GB of memory during typical usage. A reboot, with no unnecessary startup applications, reduced memory consumption to around 4.2GB; however, opening just a handful of Chrome tabs quickly escalated usage to about 5.5GB.
This situation raises questions about Microsoft’s optimization of Windows 11 for devices with 8GB of RAM. Despite the company’s commitment to reducing the operating system’s memory footprint as part of its Windows K2 initiative, user experiences suggest that 8GB is insufficient for reliable performance. Although Windows 11 has a minimum requirement of 4GB of RAM, many users have expressed that even 8GB does not provide the smooth experience they expect.
Historically, Microsoft has recommended 16GB of RAM as the baseline for a seamless Windows 11 experience. However, in June, the company shifted its stance with the launch of the new 8GB Surface devices, likely influenced by a significant memory shortage that has led to rising hardware prices.
On the updated Surface Laptop page on the Microsoft Store, 8GB of RAM is now described as “great for everyday use like browsing, streaming, schoolwork, and productivity apps.” Notably, the previous recommendation for 16GB has been omitted, although the company does indicate that an additional 8GB is necessary to access the Copilot+ AI features.
