Windows 11 can now share audio to two Bluetooth headsets at once

Microsoft is enhancing the audio experience for Windows 11 users with an innovative feature that allows two Bluetooth headsets to share audio simultaneously. This new capability, aptly named “Shared Audio,” draws inspiration from Apple’s well-received Share Audio function for AirPods and iPhones.

Details of the Shared Audio Feature

Utilizing Bluetooth LE Audio technology, the Shared Audio feature enables two users to connect their Bluetooth audio devices to a single Windows PC, allowing them to enjoy the same audio stream concurrently. Each user can independently adjust the volume on their respective devices, creating a personalized listening experience.

This feature is particularly beneficial in social settings or while traveling. Imagine sharing a captivating podcast or an engaging movie with a friend on a train or airplane, all without disturbing fellow passengers. The ease of sharing audio makes it an attractive option for those who want to enjoy media together.

Previously, Windows did not support the simultaneous use of two Bluetooth headsets on a single device. However, with the recent optional update, KB5089573, Microsoft has introduced this much-anticipated functionality.

[Shared Audio] New! Shared Audio enables two people to listen to the same audio from a single Windows 11 PC at the same time. It uses Bluetooth® LE Audio broadcast technology to make sharing easy. For example, you can watch a movie while traveling or listen to music while studying together. To start sharing audio, open Quick settings from the taskbar, select Shared Audio, choose two supported, paired, and connected devices, and then select Start sharing. It is important to note that the rollout of the Shared Audio feature is gradual. Users may find that even after installing the update, the feature may not be immediately available. Patience is key, as Microsoft will enable it on specific devices over time. Once accessible, users can easily locate the feature in the Quick settings menu on their taskbar.

For those wondering about compatibility, Bluetooth LE Audio is supported on most modern Windows computers. However, it is essential that both the PC and the connected audio devices are equipped to handle audio broadcasting.

This month’s update is significant not only for the Shared Audio feature but also introduces another enhancement known as the Low Latency Profile, which promises to improve overall performance and responsiveness on Windows 11 devices.

For users still on Windows 11 Home, it might be worth considering an upgrade to Windows 11 Pro to fully leverage the range of features available. Interested users can find attractive upgrade options in the PCWorld Software Store.
