Windows 11 July 2025 update issues confirmed, Microsoft says it falsely claimed fixes

In the latest developments surrounding Windows 11 24H2, users have encountered a persistent issue with the Event Viewer, which flags a critical Firewall error labeled as “Windows Firewall With Advanced Security 2042 None.” This error, however, is a benign glitch that users can safely disregard. Despite Microsoft’s earlier assurances that this issue was resolved in the July 2025 Update (KB5062553), it appears that the update inadvertently exacerbated the problem rather than rectifying it.

The origins of this false alarm trace back to the optional June 2025 update (KB5060829), during which the erroneous Firewall error first emerged. When Microsoft released KB5062553, the company confidently stated in its release notes that the issue had been “fully” addressed. A cached version of these notes reveals the misleading claim:

“This update addresses an issue found in Event Viewer as Event 2042 for Windows Firewall with Advanced Security. The event appears as ‘Config Read Failed’ with the message ‘More data is available.’” – Microsoft’s official release notes published on July 8.

Despite these assertions, users, including myself, continued to experience the same “Windows Firewall With Advanced Security 2042 None” error. In a previous article, I detailed the various complications associated with the KB5062553 update, specifically highlighting that the Firewall issue persisted across multiple devices.

In a recent update to its documentation, Microsoft has acknowledged the error in its previous claims regarding the Firewall issue. The company expressed regret for the confusion caused and assured users that a resolution is on the horizon, slated for inclusion in an upcoming cumulative update. Microsoft stated:

“This disclosure was mistakenly updated to Resolved status on July 8. A resolution for this issue is planned to be included in an update to be released in the coming weeks. We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion.”

What is the Windows Firewall error, and why can you safely ignore it?

The error logged in the Event Viewer, titled “Windows Firewall With Advanced Security 2042 None,” is harmless and does not affect the overall functionality of your PC. This message appears when the operating system anticipates a specific amount of information but receives more than it can process initially. Consequently, the firewall logs Event ID 2042 with the message “Config Read Failed,” even though the service promptly rereads the data and continues to operate normally.

Microsoft has confirmed that this warning stems from a coding bug introduced in recent updates for Windows 11 24H2. Importantly, this glitch affects only the event log entry and not the firewall’s performance itself. Furthermore, reports indicate that Microsoft is currently testing a new feature for the Firewall. However, due to the unfinished state of this feature and its unintended link to the existing code, users have been experiencing these misleading errors in the Event Viewer.

It is also noteworthy that the July update, KB5062553, has been associated with other issues, including installation problems, which may also be addressed in the forthcoming cumulative update.
