In a recent announcement shared on its blog for Windows Insiders, Microsoft unveiled an innovative search feature that promises to enhance the user experience on Copilot+ PCs. This new system allows users to locate files not just by their names, but by their descriptions, a significant leap forward in file retrieval technology.
Revolutionizing File Search
This semantic indexing capability is designed to work in tandem with traditional file indexing on Intel and AMD-powered devices. Users can now effortlessly search for files through various platforms, including File Explorer, the Windows search box, and Settings, simply by describing what they remember about the file.
For instance, if a user recalls an image featuring a scenic view, they can type in “bridge at sunset” and the system will retrieve the corresponding image. Similarly, documents can be found by entering phrases such as “Europe trip budget,” while settings can be accessed with queries like “change my theme.”
Notably, this feature is not limited to online searches; it also functions offline on Copilot+ PCs, leveraging the impressive capabilities of the 40+ TOPS Neural Processing Unit (NPU) integrated within these devices. This advancement not only streamlines the search process but also enhances productivity by allowing users to find what they need quickly and efficiently.
