Microsoft has unveiled the KB5083631 optional cumulative update for Windows 11, introducing a suite of 34 enhancements designed to elevate user experience and system performance. Among the notable features is a new Xbox mode tailored for Windows PCs, which aims to create an immersive gaming environment by minimizing distractions and showcasing games in a full-screen interface. This mode can be accessed through the Xbox app, Game Bar settings, or via the keyboard shortcut Windows logo key + F11.

This preview update serves as a testing ground for administrators, allowing them to explore bug fixes, improvements, and new features ahead of their general release during the upcoming Patch Tuesday. Unlike standard cumulative updates, this monthly optional update focuses solely on quality enhancements and does not include security fixes.

KB5083631 update highlights

The April 2026 optional update enhances the performance of startup applications, streamlining the launch process for apps listed under Settings > Apps > Startup. Additionally, it introduces improved security and performance for batch files and CMD scripts, a feature that was initially rolled out to Windows 11 Insiders in the Beta and Dev channels earlier this year. Microsoft elaborated, stating, “Starting with this release, administrators can enable a more secure processing mode for batch files, preventing changes during execution.”

To install KB5083631, users can navigate to Windows Settings, click on Windows Update, and select ‘Check for Updates’. As this is an optional update, users must click the ‘Download and install’ link if they prefer not to install it manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Once installed, this non-security update will elevate Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices to builds 26100.8328 and 26200.8328, respectively. The update also brings a variety of other enhancements, including:

  • Haptic feedback on supported input devices, enhancing user interaction during tasks such as aligning objects in PowerPoint or resizing windows. This feature can be managed under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse, Touchpad, or Pen > Haptic signals.
  • [Secure Boot] improvements, which enhance the coverage of devices eligible for new Secure Boot certificates, ensuring a phased rollout based on successful update signals.
  • [Authentication (Kerberos)] enhancements that address issues with Remote Desktop sessions utilizing Remote Credential Guard, specifically resolving error 0xc000009a.
  • [Windows Security] updates that improve event logging related to CVE‑2024‑30098, aiding in the identification of applications dependent on smart card certificates that may require updates.
  • Elimination of a white flash that could occur when opening This PC or resizing the Details pane in dark mode.
  • Increased reliability of explorer.exe processes, ensuring they terminate appropriately after closing File Explorer windows.

Furthermore, Microsoft is rolling out updated Secure Boot certificates to replace the original 2011 certificates, which are set to expire in late June 2026. In January, the company outlined its strategy for refreshing these certificates on eligible Windows 11 systems, following prior advisories to administrators regarding the need for updates before expiration.

It is also important to note that some Windows Server 2025 devices with a non-recommended BitLocker Group Policy configuration may encounter a BitLocker recovery prompt, requiring users to enter the recovery key upon the first restart after deploying the KB5083631 update.

Earlier this month, Microsoft addressed issues with the March 2026 KB5079391 preview update by releasing an out-of-band update to rectify installation errors associated with code 0x80073712.
