Windows 11 Faces Audio Output Challenges Following September Update
In a recent turn of events, Microsoft has acknowledged an issue stemming from the September security update, specifically KB5124008, which has disrupted audio output for some users of Windows 11. The update has been linked to complications with USB audio devices, leaving many users unable to hear sound from their systems.
According to the updated support documentation, affected users may encounter error messages such as “This device cannot start (Code 10)” within the device manager, indicating that certain USB audio devices are not being recognized. Additional symptoms reported include unresponsive volume controls, complete absence of audio output, and sound settings that fail to respond. In some instances, devices may not even appear in the device manager.
Microsoft has clarified that this issue is limited to USB Audio Class 1.0 devices. Interestingly, a workaround has emerged, albeit an unconventional one. While some USB audio devices may still function in a standard stereo configuration, switching to multichannel audio modes—such as 8-channel or 3D audio—can lead to failure. Users have found that reverting to a 2-channel audio mode can restore functionality for some devices, though this does not signify a comprehensive solution. The company is actively working towards a more permanent fix.
This latest hiccup is not an isolated incident; Microsoft has previously faced criticism for bugs that affect external devices following operating system updates. A notable example includes the August update, which reset custom cursors to an oversized default setting, frustrating users who found their color and size adjustments ineffective despite repeated attempts. Additionally, gameplay has been impacted, with reports of forced crashes, random freezes, and unexpected device restarts linked to RGB peripherals.
A recent poll conducted with nearly 33,000 participants revealed a concerning trend: a significant number of respondents believe that the quality of Windows 11 is deteriorating, despite Microsoft’s assurances of improvement. This ongoing series of problematic updates raises questions about the reliability of the platform as users navigate these challenges.
