Windows 11 tests Bluetooth audio sharing that connects two headsets at once

Microsoft is set to enhance the audio experience for Windows 11 users with a new feature that enables shared audio streaming. This innovative capability allows users to broadcast sound across multiple wireless headphones, speakers, earbuds, or hearing aids, all thanks to the implementation of the Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) audio codec. Currently, this feature is being rolled out in preview mode to Windows 11 Insiders participating in the Dev and Beta channels.

The shared audio functionality is particularly useful for those moments when you want to enjoy a movie or listen to music with a friend or family member, all while using your own wireless headsets. To utilize this feature, users simply need to connect Bluetooth LE-supported devices to their Windows 11 PC and select the “Shared audio (preview)” option from the quick settings menu.

Microsoft first introduced the LE Audio feature in August, which significantly improves audio quality for wireless headsets during gaming or calls. Other tech giants have also embraced this technology; for instance, Google has integrated the Bluetooth LE-based Auracast feature into Android 16 devices, enabling audio broadcasting to compatible hearing aids. This functionality has been further expanded to allow Pixel 8 phones and newer models to connect to two pairs of headphones simultaneously. Similarly, Samsung has begun incorporating Auracast into its devices, starting with the Galaxy S24 launched last year.

Device Compatibility and Future Rollouts

At present, the shared audio feature in Windows 11 is available exclusively on select Copilot Plus PCs, including the 13.8 and 15-inch Surface Laptops, as well as the 13-inch Surface Pro. Additional devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy Book5 360 and Galaxy Book5 Pro, are expected to support this feature in the near future. However, users should note that the shared audio functionality is limited to devices compatible with Bluetooth LE, including popular models like the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, Buds 3, Buds 3 Pro, and the Sony WH-1000XM6 wireless headphones.
