Windows 11 will let you cut Copilot key from your life, no knife or screwdriver required

Windows 11 is poised to enhance user experience with the introduction of a feature that allows the Copilot key to be configured to launch alternative applications. This development is currently under testing in Windows 11 Build 27729, which is being rolled out to Windows Insiders in the Canary Channel. The ability to customize the Copilot key is expected to resonate with users who find the Copilot app either unnecessary or prefer a different keyboard shortcut for their tasks.

This feature follows a similar testing phase that began last month for Dev and Beta Channel Insiders, indicating Microsoft’s commitment to refining user preferences. The Copilot key, present on Copilot+ PCs and many modern keyboards, has been limited in functionality until now, often leaving it underutilized for those who do not engage with Copilot. Notably, Salesforce’s CEO has expressed skepticism about Copilot’s value, likening it to the outdated Microsoft Clippy.

Should testing yield positive results, users will soon have the option to remap the Copilot key through the Windows 11 Settings app, allowing them to launch their preferred applications. However, it’s important to note that Microsoft has placed restrictions on which applications can be opened via the Copilot key. Only MSIX packaged and signed applications will be eligible, a measure designed to uphold security and privacy standards for users.

Interestingly, Microsoft did not create a new key for Copilot; instead, they programmed the existing Copilot key to function using the key combination of Left Shift + Windows key + F23. This unique combination is unlikely to conflict with other shortcuts, as very few keyboards include an F23 key.

Windows 11 Build 27729: Changes and Improvements

  • Settings
The latest update introduces the ability to configure the Copilot key. Users can select an MSIX packaged and signed app to launch, ensuring compliance with security and privacy requirements. Until a different application is chosen, the key will continue to activate Copilot on devices where the app is installed. This setting can be adjusted via Settings > Personalization > Text input. For those without a Copilot key on their keyboard, this setting will remain inactive. Further refinements to this feature are anticipated in future updates.
