Windows 11 is poised for significant enhancements to its accessibility features, particularly with the Magnifier tool. A new contrast theme is set to debut, aimed at improving visibility by minimizing glare. While it may initially resemble color inversion, this feature operates distinctly in several important aspects.
Color inversion alters every element on the screen, impacting photos, videos, and various media types. In contrast, the new contrast themes will modify the colors of the interface without affecting the integrity of media content.
Accessibility – Mouse Indicator
- A refined animation for the Mouse indicator is being introduced, which can be activated via the Accessibility settings. Users will also have the option to keep the indicator visible until the Esc key is pressed.
Magnifier
- A new contrast theme toggle for a lower-glare screen. For those who find bright screens uncomfortable, color inversion has been a common solution to reduce glare. However, this method alters all on-screen content. The upcoming update will introduce a dedicated contrast theme toggle within the Magnifier.
- Reduce glare with a single toggle. Users can easily activate the contrast theme directly from the Magnifier toolbar, enhancing their viewing experience.
- Choose the contrast theme that works best for you. The default setting will apply a dark theme, but users can customize their preferences under Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier.
- Photos, videos, and charts retain their original colors. Unlike color inversion, the contrast theme will recolor the interface while preserving the true colors of photos, charts, and videos.
- Color inversion remains available. This new feature is not intended to replace color inversion; rather, it serves as an additional option for those seeking a darker interface without altering color fidelity.
Cloud Rebuild
- The Cloud rebuild feature is receiving updates to enhance its functionality. This recovery option allows users to restore their Windows 11 PC to a clean, known-good state through a full OS reinstall, now with two new enhancements.
- Cloud rebuild will include an option to sanitize the device’s drives during the process. Users can select Remove files for personal retention or Remove & sanitize files when preparing the device for recycling or reassignment. The sanitize function utilizes the storage hardware’s erase capabilities to securely delete data before reinstalling Windows, ensuring irreversible data removal.
- IT administrators will have the ability to configure and initiate a Cloud rebuild remotely through the Recovery CSP, using either the currently installed build or a specified target build.
Live Captions
- The Live Captions feature is being enhanced with a new Include Screen Reader audio setting, which is disabled by default. When this setting is off, Live Captions will focus solely on transcribing audio from microphones and system sounds, excluding audio from screen readers like Narrator, JAWS, and NVDA.
Hyper-V
- Issues affecting applications that utilized HCS-managed virtual machines have been resolved, particularly those related to sharing host folders with Linux VMs using Plan9. Previously, folders shared from the Windows host via Plan9 were either not visible or inaccessible within the guest environment.
Other Improvements
- Resolved an issue where backups using File History unexpectedly failed, displaying an error indicating “No usable drives found.”
Many of these changes have already been rolled out to Insiders in the Beta Channel, including enhancements to Live Captions and Hyper-V. The updates regarding Cloud rebuild are also active in the Experimental (26H1) Channel. Microsoft has revamped its Insider channels this year, allowing multiple builds to be released simultaneously.
