Revolutionizing Age Verification in Apps
For years, applications seeking to implement age verification have relied on rudimentary techniques. These methods often included asking for credit card information, utilizing third-party identity verification services, or simply trusting users to input their birth dates or check a box affirming they are at least 18 years old. However, these approaches fall short of providing genuine proof of adulthood, particularly for platforms featuring mature content.
In a significant shift, Microsoft aims to streamline the age verification process through its Windows Age APIs. This innovative solution categorizes users into specific age groups and offers a status indicating whether their age has been independently verified. This initiative comes as regulatory bodies in the US, UK, and EU intensify their calls for more stringent age verification laws.
The Windows Age APIs allow applications to pose two essential questions: “Which age group does this user belong to?” and “Has the user’s age been independently verified?” Importantly, Microsoft assures that apps will not have access to users’ actual birth dates, thereby enhancing privacy while still ensuring compliance.
However, not all applications will have the privilege of utilizing the Windows Age APIs for these inquiries. Microsoft’s “Digital Safety” platform first assesses each app to confirm it is properly registered and authorized to request age verification. This measure ensures that only legitimate applications can access age-related data, preventing arbitrary collection of user information.
Currently, the Windows Age APIs are documented within the Windows SDK, yet they have not been activated in Windows 11. While the timeline for their implementation remains uncertain, it is anticipated that this feature will be rolled out before the conclusion of 2026, marking a pivotal advancement in the realm of digital safety and user protection.
