Windows 11’s latest preview build makes updating your PC less of a hassle

Microsoft has unveiled a new Release Preview build for Windows 11 Insiders, introducing enhancements that many users have long awaited. Among the notable updates is a significant improvement to the Windows Update feature, which now provides an estimated offline time for updates. This addition aims to alleviate the common frustration of unexpected downtime during critical tasks.

Enhanced Windows Update Experience

With the latest build, users will see an estimated duration for how long their PC will remain offline while installing updates. This information will be accessible both through the Windows Update settings page and the Start menu power button. Such transparency is reminiscent of a feature already available in macOS, where users are informed of the expected installation time for updates. This enhancement is likely to make the update process less daunting for many, allowing for better planning around essential tasks.

In addition to the Windows Update improvements, the KB5055627 update introduces the revamped Copilot+ Recall feature. This innovative tool captures snapshots of your activities throughout the day, making it easier to retrieve information when needed. For example, if you stumble upon a café advertisement while browsing but forget its name, Recall allows you to search through your snapshots to quickly find that information.

To utilize this feature, users must opt in and enable Windows Hello for secure access to their snapshots. The system requirements for using Recall include a Copilot+ PC with a minimum of 16GB of RAM, 8 logical processors, and 256GB of storage, with at least 50GB of free space.

Improved Search Capabilities

The update also enhances Windows Search, allowing users to search for files and settings using descriptive terms rather than exact names or keywords. Initially available only on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs, this feature is now accessible on both AMD and Intel-powered devices, broadening its usability.

Another exciting addition is the Click to DO feature, currently in preview. This tool streamlines tasks by suggesting relevant applications based on user selections. For instance, selecting an image might prompt options such as “erasing objects using the Photos app” or “removing the background using Paint,” thereby saving time and enhancing productivity.

As these features are rolled out gradually, users may not see them immediately after updating. For those unfamiliar with the Windows 11 Release Preview branch, a comprehensive guide is available through the Windows Insider Program to assist in navigating these new enhancements.
