Windows 11 has recently introduced its September 2025 Update (KB5065789), bringing with it a series of enhancements to the taskbar that are particularly beneficial for users with multiple displays. Among the most significant changes is the expanded functionality of the Notification Center, which now allows it to open on secondary displays. This update is available for both Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 versions.
To appreciate the improvements, it’s essential to recognize the limitations that existed with secondary monitor support in Windows 11. For instance, when utilizing an external 27-inch LG monitor alongside an ASUS laptop, users are presented with two projection options: Duplicate and Extend. The Duplicate option mirrors the primary screen, meaning that any action taken on one display is reflected on the other. However, the Extend option provides additional workspace, which many users prefer.
Previously, in Extend mode, clicking the clock in the system tray would only launch the Notification Center on the primary display, regardless of which screen was being used. This behavior was somewhat counterintuitive, especially for those who relied on their secondary display for productivity. Initially, Windows 11 did not even feature a taskbar clock on the second screen, prompting users to seek third-party solutions until Microsoft integrated a native option into the operating system.
Hands on with Notification Center support on the secondary display on Windows 11
The latest update rectifies this issue, allowing users to access the Notification Center from either display without needing to switch back to the primary screen. This enhancement significantly improves workflow, as notifications, calendar access, and Do Not Disturb (DND) settings can now be managed directly from the secondary display. The frustration of having to redirect the cursor to the primary screen for simple tasks is now a thing of the past, enabling smoother multitasking and focus.
Additionally, users can right-click the system tray clock to access Date and Time settings, as well as Notification preferences directly from the context menu, streamlining the user experience even further.
Full clock with seconds in the notifications center on Windows 11
Delving deeper into the features, users can now right-click the system clock on the taskbar, select “Adjust date & time,” and enable the “Show time in Notification Center” option. This brings back the familiar full clock display from Windows 10 to the Notification Center in Windows 11.
Moreover, the Calendar within the Notification Center can be collapsed, allowing for a more compact view with just the clock and notifications visible above it. This feature is particularly useful for those who prefer a cleaner interface, as it minimizes the tall Notification Center flyout that can sometimes be overwhelming.
As these updates roll out, users are encouraged to share their thoughts and experiences, fostering a community dialogue about the evolving capabilities of Windows 11.
