Windows 11’s Snipping Tool gets smart about copying table data

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool continues to evolve, enhancing its functionality to meet the needs of users. The latest development, currently in testing, introduces a feature that allows users to copy data formatted as a table directly into a spreadsheet. This addition promises to streamline the process of transferring tabular data, ensuring that formatting is preserved when moving from a screenshot to a spreadsheet application.

New Features in Snipping Tool

With this new capability, if the Snipping Tool recognizes that the captured data is organized in rows and columns, it will maintain that structure when copied. This seemingly small enhancement is poised to make a significant difference in user experience, particularly for those who frequently work with data tables.

The feature is part of version 11.2409.22.0 of the Snipping Tool, which is being rolled out alongside the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.2122 in the Dev Channel. As these builds are primarily for testing purposes, there is no certainty that this feature will be included in future updates of Windows or its native applications.

To utilize this new functionality, users can capture a screenshot containing table data, select the ‘Text actions’ option, and then choose ‘Copy as table.’ This will allow for the structured table data to be pasted seamlessly into a spreadsheet. It is important to note that the feature works optimally when the screenshot contains only one table.

While many users may instinctively rely on the familiar CTRL+C and CTRL+V shortcuts for copying and pasting, this new feature is specifically designed to address situations where the format of the data may be ambiguous. For traditional copy and paste operations between spreadsheets, the standard commands are expected to remain unchanged.

In addition to this new copy function, the Snipping Tool also retains its screen recording capabilities, which can be more beneficial than one might initially assume. Together, these features enhance the overall utility of the Snipping Tool, making it a versatile asset for users navigating the complexities of data management.
