Microsoft has made significant strides in enhancing the user experience for its Windows 11 remote desktop feature, now available on Meta’s Quest 3 and Quest 3S headsets. This innovative feature allows users to project multiple high-resolution monitors directly into their headset, offering a glimpse into a more immersive work environment. Notably, it also introduces an ultrawide mode, reminiscent of the capabilities found in Apple’s Vision Pro.
The journey began in December 2024 when Microsoft first unveiled its virtual desktop feature for Quest headsets in a preview format. Following this, Meta has progressively rolled out the feature to a broader audience through the Horizon OS v81 update. Initially, users could only connect multiple desktop displays, but recent updates have revealed an exciting option to transform the virtual desktop into a sweeping ultrawide display that curves around the user’s field of view.
To get started, users need to download the Mixed Reality Link application on their Windows computer. Once installed, Quest 3 and 3S wearers can easily pair their headset by glancing at their keyboard and selecting the “pair” option. This seamless integration allows for interaction with the desktop display right from the headset. Meta has also ensured that users have the flexibility to either immerse themselves fully in their virtual desktop or utilize passthrough technology, enabling them to remain aware of their physical surroundings.
In addition to the remote desktop feature, Meta is enhancing functionality across its platform. Users can now rescale and resize displays across all applications, providing a tailored experience. The introduction of a Full Passthrough feature allows for quick checks of the environment by simply double-tapping on the side of the headset or pressing the action button on the Meta Quest 3S. Furthermore, multitasking has reached new heights, with the ability to open up to 12 applications simultaneously, making it easier than ever to juggle various tasks in a virtual workspace.
