Windows 11’s WSL 2 now officially has support from Arch Linux

Arch Linux has officially made its debut on Microsoft’s Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) for Windows 11 users, following an initial tease earlier this year. This release comes shortly after Fedora 42 also joined the WSL lineup, marking a significant expansion of options for developers and enthusiasts alike.

Collaboration with Microsoft

The journey to bring Arch Linux to WSL began with discussions between the Arch Linux team and Microsoft, who expressed a keen interest in offering a robust, official version of Arch Linux within the WSL environment. This collaboration has resulted in a dedicated GitLab repository specifically for Arch Linux on WSL, ensuring that it remains distinct from the main release.

Images for Arch Linux are set to be generated on a monthly basis, providing users with regular updates. However, it’s important to note that this version is exclusively compatible with WSL 2, leaving WSL 1 users unable to participate in this latest offering.

Simplified Installation Process

Installing Arch Linux on WSL is a straightforward process. Users can initiate the installation by opening PowerShell and entering the following command:

wsl --install archlinux

After a brief download and installation period, Arch Linux will be ready for use. For those utilizing Windows Terminal, a simple restart will add Arch Linux to the dropdown menu. Alternatively, users can access it directly from PowerShell by typing:

wsl --d archlinux

While the performance of Arch Linux on WSL is reported to be quite impressive, the experience may vary based on individual familiarity with the system. For those who have been eager to integrate Arch into their WSL environment, this release opens the door to a new realm of possibilities.
