Microsoft is taking significant strides to enhance the Xbox app for PC gamers with the introduction of a new feature known as “My apps.” This innovative addition aims to streamline the gaming experience by consolidating various launchers and gaming tools into a single, user-friendly interface. Gamers will no longer need to navigate through multiple stores and applications; instead, they can manage everything directly from the Xbox app.
The “My apps” tab will be located within the Xbox app’s library, showcasing the most frequently used third-party applications. This means that players can effortlessly install and launch programs such as Steam, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, Chrome, and GOG Galaxy—all from one convenient location.
Handhelds are one of the main targets for this feature
This feature is particularly beneficial for handheld gaming PCs. Devices like the forthcoming ROG Xbox Ally and other Windows 11 handhelds often present challenges when switching between various applications on the desktop. With the My apps feature, players can access all their launchers while in the Xbox full-screen mode, simplifying the process of opening multiple programs from a single interface. Additionally, this mode minimizes background activity and defers non-essential tasks, allowing more system resources to be allocated to games for a smoother gameplay experience. The Xbox full-screen feature is one of the “Three big features” that make the Xbox Ally an enticing option for gamers.
Currently, My apps is undergoing testing with a limited selection of applications. Initial tests conducted by The Verge indicate that if a launcher like Battle.net is already installed, the Xbox app will seamlessly open it. If the launcher is not installed, the Xbox app can facilitate the installation process without requiring users to exit the Xbox interface. While some bugs have been reported—such as difficulties in installing GOG Galaxy during early testing—these issues are expected as the feature is still in beta.

This is merely the beginning, as Microsoft plans to broaden support for additional applications over time. This evolution could ultimately transform the Xbox app into a central hub for PC gaming. This development is particularly exciting for those anticipating the release of the Xbox ROG Ally or Xbox ROG Ally X, set to launch on October 16 this year. While pre-orders have yet to be announced, they are expected to be available in September.
