Windows Mail will cease to work by year’s end

As the calendar turns to December 31, 2024, a significant shift is set to unfold for users of Windows Mail. Microsoft has made it clear that not only will support for the application cease, but it will also become entirely unusable. This development, while anticipated, underscores the tech giant’s push towards its new Outlook app, which it strongly recommends as the alternative for email management.

In a recent update on its support page, Microsoft stated, “After December 31, 2024, users will no longer be able to send and receive email using Windows Mail and Calendar.” The application, which many users encountered through the default installation of Windows 10 or 11, has been sending notifications urging users to transition to the Outlook app. For some, this transition has already begun, with automatic updates leading to earlier expiration notices for Windows Mail.

Exporting local data

Despite the impending discontinuation of Windows Mail, users will retain the ability to export their local emails, calendar events, and contacts. The Outlook for Windows app facilitates this process, allowing users to revert to the old application through the Settings menu under General and About Outlook.

This is not the first time Microsoft has phased out a service in this manner. Last year, the company quietly announced the discontinuation of support for Windows Mixed Reality. In that instance, the functionality of the VR platform was permanently lost following updates to Windows 11 24H2, rendering headsets inoperable on affected PCs.

Windows 10 end date approaches

Looking ahead, the transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11 presents another critical juncture for users. While the newer operating system is gradually capturing market share, Windows 10 remains prevalent among users. However, with less than a year until its end date, the urgency for migration is palpable.

Tip: Microsoft advises Windows 10 users to consider purchasing a new PC.
