Microsoft is making a significant shift in how users interact with its Office suite, particularly with Word for Windows. The latest update introduces an automatic saving feature that directs newly drafted content straight to the Microsoft cloud, OneDrive. This change is designed to enhance user experience by minimizing the risk of losing work due to unexpected program crashes, power outages, or other disruptions.
For those who prefer to maintain control over their storage preferences, there are options available. Users can deactivate the autosave feature altogether or select an alternative cloud service for automatic storage in the settings menu. Additionally, the traditional choice of saving directly to a local computer or network drive remains intact, catering to those who favor a more conventional approach.
Upon closing Word without manually saving, users will be prompted to decide whether to retain their work in the cloud or discard it. This new default setting is effective immediately for Word for Windows version 2509 (build 19221.20000), with plans to extend similar functionalities to Excel and PowerPoint later this year.
The co-pilot is already waiting
In a recent blog post, Microsoft’s product manager, Raul Munoz, highlighted the advantages of this automatic saving feature. By ensuring that work is consistently saved, users can access and edit their documents from various devices, enhancing collaboration and flexibility. This functionality also integrates seamlessly with Microsoft’s AI tool, Copilot, which can assist users in evaluating and editing files stored on OneDrive, provided they have the necessary licenses.
However, Munoz also noted some unexpected bugs affecting Word for Windows. For instance, if the start screen is disabled at launch, the autosave feature may fail for the first file of each session. Additionally, opening a second instance of Word during an active session can lead to newly created files not being saved automatically, a quirk that users will need to navigate as they adapt to these changes.
