Windows restart issues fixed with Patch Tuesday update

Microsoft has announced that the issues surrounding the Windows 11 Patch Tuesday preview have been successfully resolved. The non-security update preview, identified as KB5043145, which was released at the end of September, encountered performance challenges for a segment of users. Reports indicated that some experienced multiple restarts, blue or green screens, or found themselves facing the Automatic Repair tool after the installation of the update.

Resolution of Issues

According to Microsoft, the restart issue has been addressed and is now marked as fixed in the known issues list associated with the original patch. This resolution comes as a relief to administrators, especially considering the critical nature of the security fixes included in the recent Patch Tuesday update.

Among these fixes was a significant remedy for a remote code execution vulnerability that was already being exploited, albeit requiring the victim to install a file locally. Microsoft emphasized in the release notes for the Patch Tuesday fix that it encompassed all the “improvements” from September’s preview. Fortunately, the multiple restarts that plagued users following the installation of the September update have been rectified.

Additionally, the issues that led to restarts also affected USB and Bluetooth connections for certain devices. These problems are expected to be resolved with the latest Patch Tuesday release. However, Microsoft has recommended that users who previously installed the earlier update utilize a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) or a Group Policy to manage any residual issues.

This Patch Tuesday release holds particular significance for Home and Pro users of Windows 11 22H2, as it marks the final updates they will receive due to the edition reaching the end of servicing. Meanwhile, Enterprise and Education editions will continue to receive support until next year, when they too will conclude their servicing lifecycle. It is worth noting that Windows 10 will also reach the end of its life cycle concurrently.

As of October 8, the remaining editions of Windows 11 21H2 have also reached the end of their security updates, with Home and Pro editions having exited support earlier in 2023.
