During a recent discussion with investors, CEO Andrew Wilson hinted at an ambitious initiative that could be dubbed ‘Apex 2.0’. This announcement comes on the heels of a reported decline in net bookings for the game, a trend that aligns with EA’s expectations.
Future Developments in Apex Legends
Since its launch in 2019, Apex Legends has captivated over 200 million players worldwide. Despite the recent downturn in bookings, Wilson emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing the player experience. He stated, “Sometime on a longer-term time horizon, there will be an even bigger, more meaningful update to that broader game experience. An Apex 2.0, if you will. This will not be the final incarnation of Apex.”
Wilson reassured investors that the team remains dedicated to the core community, which continues to engage millions of players. He elaborated on the strategic timing of the update, indicating that it is likely to follow the launch of Battlefield Labs, anticipated to debut before April 2026. “The team is diligently working through what that would be,” he noted, hinting at the exciting possibilities ahead.
As the gaming landscape evolves, Apex Legends is expected to transition to a more modern engine, moving away from the current modified version of Valve’s Source engine, which has begun to show its age. This upgrade may also address long-standing fan requests, such as improved server tick rates, enhancing the overall gameplay experience.
