Transitioning to Blue Ivory
After being acquired by a private equity firm in 2023, Magaya faced the challenge of migrating its customers from the legacy Classic system to the more advanced Blue Ivory platform. However, initial performance issues with Blue Ivory’s database raised concerns, prompting the company to seek a solution. In collaboration with Tessell, Magaya aimed to optimise its PostgreSQL environment and enable seamless cloud scalability through AWS.

The original PostgreSQL setup for Blue Ivory was not optimised for high-volume queries, leading to significant bottlenecks. Compounding this issue was a custom-built Reservation Service that emulated the legacy system’s pessimistic-locking behaviour, which resulted in prolonged processing times and adversely affected transaction speeds. Furthermore, the reliance on a single PostgreSQL expert created an operational risk, as customers experienced slower response times during the transition, jeopardising adoption rates.

Tessell’s managed PostgreSQL platform enabled Magaya to transform Blue Ivory into a high-performance solution, achieving a tenfold improvement in query execution speeds. The logistics operations were enhanced to efficiently handle tens of thousands of rows per second. Tessell’s architecture, which utilised multiple Availability Zones, significantly reduced downtime risks and ensured continuous operations. The migration process to AWS was executed seamlessly, with Tessell optimising partitioning strategies, memory buffers, and disk I/O to enhance database efficiency. Operational risks were further mitigated through Tessell’s 24/7 expert support, eliminating the dependency on a single in-house DBA for database management.

The optimisations implemented have equipped Magaya’s Blue Ivory platform for sustainable growth. Key performance bottlenecks have been effectively addressed, facilitating quicker customer onboarding and smoother migrations.
