Microsoft is diligently addressing the persistent bugs in Windows 11 24H2 with its latest optional update, KB5052093, released this past Tuesday. Users eager to enhance their experience may need to manually download and install this update, as it is being rolled out gradually.
Squashed bugs
The update brings a host of fixes, particularly for the often-troublesome File Explorer. Users can expect improved performance when loading files with numerous media items, a faster context menu response when right-clicking on cloud-stored files, and a more reliable address bar that no longer overlaps files in full-screen mode. Additionally, thumbnails for cloud files should now appear consistently in search results.
Previously reported issues, such as erratic color displays in the Start menu and misidentification of hard drives in Task Manager, have also been addressed. Other fixes include resolving problems with Guest account sign-ins in Shared PC mode and ensuring that custom mouse pointer colors remain intact after User Account Control (UAC) prompts. Audio-related bugs, including unexpected volume spikes upon waking from sleep and USB audio devices ceasing to function after periods of inactivity, are now resolved as well.
Glitch repairs
KB5052093 also tackles several glitches that have plagued users. For instance, Remote Desktop connectivity issues and display rendering problems have been rectified. The update improves the drag-and-drop functionality for emails and files in applications on high DPI displays, and it addresses an error message that could occur when opening the Settings screen.
Improved features
In addition to bug fixes, the update introduces several new features. Users can now share files directly from a jump list on the Windows Taskbar, a feature available for applications that support jump lists. Furthermore, Windows now allows multiple applications to access the camera’s video stream simultaneously, enhancing usability. The Windows Narrator has also received enhancements, enabling users to navigate long web pages and emails more efficiently by skipping links and jumping to specific content.
Windows Spotlight, which showcases dynamic background images, has been made more user-friendly. Users can hover over images to learn more about them, and the Spotlight icon is now conveniently located at the lower right corner of the desktop. Additionally, a “referral card” for a PC Game Pass subscription may appear on the home page of the Settings screen for eligible users, encouraging them to invite friends and family to explore the service.
Optional preview
As this update is an optional preview, users may not find it readily available through the usual update process. To check for the update, navigate to Settings, select Windows Update, and ensure the option for “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” is enabled. If KB5052093 appears, users can proceed with the installation. Alternatively, it can be manually downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog, although this method may require some technical know-how.
For those who prefer to wait, the official version of this update will be released next month on March 11, coinciding with the regular Patch Tuesday updates. Patience may be prudent, as the official release will simplify the update process for all users.
