The default file manager on Windows, Windows Explorer, often leaves power users yearning for more functionality. As a result, many turn to alternative file managers that offer enhanced features. However, for those who prefer to stick with Windows Explorer, there are several mods and add-ons available to enrich the user experience. Among these, QuickLook stands out, enabling users to preview files before opening them, akin to the functionality found in macOS. Another noteworthy addition is the Explorer Tab Utility, which introduces a tabbed layout reminiscent of web browsers, making navigation more intuitive.
Recently, I discovered TeraCopy, an add-on that replaces the native file copying system on Windows with a more secure, faster, and reliable alternative. TeraCopy boasts several features that enhance the file transfer experience. For instance, it allows users to skip problematic files during the copying process rather than terminating the entire transfer. This capability is particularly useful when dealing with large files, as it significantly speeds up the transfer process. Since incorporating TeraCopy into my workflow, it has become my go-to file copier.
What made me switch to TeraCopy
It’s a feature galore
One of the most frustrating aspects of Windows Explorer is its tendency to abruptly terminate a copying job upon encountering an error. For example, if a file transfer is interrupted due to an external SSD being disconnected, users must reconnect the device and restart the transfer from scratch. TeraCopy, however, handles such situations with grace; it pauses the transfer, waits for the device to be reconnected, and seamlessly continues from where it left off.
Another feature that I find invaluable is TeraCopy’s ability to skip corrupted or problematic files during the copying process. If an error occurs, users can choose to bypass the problematic file and proceed with the transfer. At the end of the operation, TeraCopy prompts users to attempt copying the skipped files again. This functionality eliminates the need to manually locate and transfer problematic files, enhancing overall efficiency.
Queue multiple copying jobs on Windows
Windows Explorer typically executes multiple copying tasks simultaneously, which can lead to significant slowdowns and even cause the application to become unresponsive. TeraCopy adopts a more efficient approach by queuing multiple copying tasks to execute them sequentially. This method not only improves performance but also ensures a smoother experience.
Additionally, TeraCopy maintains a comprehensive log of all file transfers, allowing users to review a list of copied files, any errors encountered, and files that could not be copied. This feature provides peace of mind, as users can easily revisit and transfer any missed files.
Slightly Intimidating UI
Beginners may not like it
While TeraCopy’s features are impressive, the user interface can be somewhat overwhelming, especially for beginners. The default Windows copying dialog box is straightforward, displaying only the progress of the transfer. In contrast, TeraCopy presents a wealth of information, including a progress bar, speed graph, average speed, and the number of skipped files, along with various transfer options. For newcomers, this abundance of data might feel intimidating. A ‘simple mode’ toggle that displays only essential information could greatly enhance the user experience for those less familiar with the software.
Enhances your workflow
Makes copying files a breeze
TeraCopy integrates seamlessly into the Windows shell, complementing the default copying functionality. When users right-click to copy and paste or use keyboard shortcuts, TeraCopy appears as an option, streamlining the process. Moreover, the application prompts for confirmation before moving folders, addressing a common frustration where users accidentally drag folders into one another without realizing it.
Furthermore, TeraCopy learns user habits and suggests frequently visited folders for pasting files, enhancing accessibility. Users can also save favorite directories for quick access within the app. These thoughtful features culminate in a seamless file copying experience. While casual users may not notice a significant difference when copying individual files, those who frequently engage in file transfers will undoubtedly appreciate the time-saving benefits TeraCopy offers.
Change the way you copy files
After utilizing TeraCopy for a few days, I find it hard to envision returning to the default Windows copying system. It has quickly become an essential application that I install on every new computer setup, as it significantly enhances the efficiency of routine tasks.
