As Microsoft approaches its momentous 50th anniversary, the company is inviting fans to reminisce about the cherished memories forged over the decades. In a delightful nod to nostalgia, Microsoft has unveiled a collection of exclusive products, including limited-edition Windows wallpapers that evoke the vibrant colors and pixelated charm of past eras. Crafted by a trio of Microsoft designers and dedicated Windows enthusiasts, these wallpapers reimagine some of the most iconic moments in Windows history.

Windows logo

At the core of this celebration lies the beloved four-square logo, a symbol that has resonated with users for years. Creative director Chris Palazzo, who has a deep-rooted connection to the brand, reflects on his experiences growing up in the ‘80s amidst floppy disks and dot matrix printers. “I started on DOS. Every single time a Windows release happened—my mind was blown,” he recalls, highlighting the nostalgic thrill that still accompanies the iconic Windows 95 startup screen.

Microsoft Mahjong

Since its launch in 2012, Microsoft’s Mahjong game has continued to thrive within the realm of Microsoft Casual Games. Designer You Zhang drew inspiration from this classic game for his intricate wallpaper designs, merging elements of the nostalgic Windows 95 user interface with the charm of childhood favorites like Minesweeper. “It’s nice to be nostalgic. There’s real value in merging retro with modern styles to create memorable designs that resonate across generations,” Zhang notes.

Cascading Solitaire

Art director Yulia Makhmudova finds joy in the visual satisfaction of watching Solitaire cards cascade at the end of each hand. Seizing the opportunity to celebrate the 50th anniversary, she designed a wallpaper featuring Solitaire cards arranged in a grand “50.” Makhmudova’s fondest memories include playing 3D Pinball on her family computer, where she spent countless hours creating user profiles in Windows XP. “It was so fun—down to the details and sound effects!” she reminisces, recalling her favorite avatar: the fish.

Yellow tulips

Inspired by her initial wallpaper creation, Makhmudova decided to explore further. The question guiding her creative process was, “What else can I ‘turn 50’?” She revisited the iconic Tulips motif from the Windows XP era, infusing it with a fresh perspective by adding 50 yellow buds. The design took on a darker counterpart for dark mode, offering a mysterious twist. “Through the lens of nostalgia and dozens of experiments, I had the chance to play with colors, materials, and new techniques—and collaborate with super-talented designers,” she shares.

For those eager to join in the festivities, more ways to celebrate Microsoft’s 50th anniversary can be discovered on Microsoft Unlocked.
