Song search history finally comes to Google app in beta (APK teardown)

Your search history can be a powerful tool, extending beyond the realms of your browser. For instance, YouTube history serves as a convenient archive, allowing users to revisit media they have previously engaged with, even when the specifics fade from memory. In a similar vein, Google is enhancing its offerings for Android users by integrating a song history feature into its song-search tool, marking a significant advancement in user experience.

New Features in the Google App

Google has long provided various mechanisms for identifying music playing in the background, leveraging its robust music-ID service. Earlier this year, development efforts hinted at the introduction of a song history view that would track previously identified tracks. While initially non-functional, this feature is now rolling out to beta testers with the latest version of the Google app, specifically the 16.13.38 beta release.

The new functionality allows users to access a record of songs identified by Google’s tool directly within the app. Previously, users could only retrieve this information through their web search history or via the Now Playing feature on Pixel devices. The addition of a history icon in the top-right corner of the song search interface signifies this new capability. Users who tap on this icon will find a populated screen displaying thumbnails, song and artist information, along with timestamps of when the searches were made.

Engaging with any of these entries will initiate a Google Search for the respective song, providing a seamless transition from identification to exploration. While this update does not alter the accuracy of Google’s song recognition capabilities, it does elevate the Google app’s song search history to a level comparable with the Now Playing feature.

In addition to this new history feature, there are indications of further enhancements in the pipeline aimed at improving song recognition. As these updates progress, users can anticipate additional refinements that will enhance their music discovery experience.
