The Meta AI logo, a vibrant blue circle adorned with pink and green hues in the bottom right corner of the Chats screen, has recently made its debut for users in the UK. By simply tapping on this logo, users can engage with a chatbot designed to provide answers to their inquiries.

A representative from Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, shared insights with Newsquest, stating, “Whether you need to settle a debate in a group chat or have a burning question you want answering on the side, you can now use Meta AI as your very own assistant through WhatsApp.” This feature aims to enhance user experience by offering assistance while ensuring privacy. The spokesperson emphasized that “Meta AI can only read messages you share with it,” assuring users that their personal messages remain end-to-end encrypted. This means that no one outside of the chat, including WhatsApp itself, can access, listen to, or share those messages.

Meta encourages users to explore the capabilities of the AI, suggesting they could ask for recipe ideas or seek restaurant recommendations within group chats for collective input. However, despite the company’s assurances that this service is entirely optional and that they are “constantly listening to user feedback,” the introduction of Meta AI has sparked a wave of mixed reactions among users. Some have expressed a desire to remove the feature altogether.

Community Reactions

One Reddit user voiced their frustration, stating, “I don’t want AI to be part of it, but it’s hard for me to delete WhatsApp.” Another echoed similar sentiments, lamenting, “Everybody I know uses it and will never consider an alternative, but I’m not happy AI is part of it.” The sentiment of reluctance to abandon WhatsApp was palpable, with one user declaring, “From now on [since Meta AI] I will be telling people to reach me on Signal and just refuse to use WhatsApp,” referring to another messaging platform.

Despite the discontent, many users acknowledge the challenge of leaving WhatsApp behind. One user remarked, “With some family members, it’s literally a matter of not being able to talk to them if we leave WhatsApp.” This sentiment resonates with a broader community, as another user pointed out, “Everyone I know uses WhatsApp and none of them are tech-savvy enough or care enough to switch to something different.”
