The cherished read-it-later app, Pocket, is set to close its doors, leaving its loyal user base with a bittersweet farewell. Mozilla has announced that current users have until October 8 to retrieve their saved items, including lists, archives, favorites, notes, and highlights.
As of today, Pocket is no longer available for download in app stores or as a browser add-on, with sign-ups and renewals also disabled. The app will officially cease operations on July 8, transitioning to an export-only mode. Users are urged to act swiftly, as all accounts and data will be permanently deleted after the October deadline.
How to export your saved items from Pocket
To begin the export process from Pocket, navigate to this link. First, ensure that your account is linked to a valid email address, which is displayed at the top left of the page when you are logged in. This email will be where your saves are sent. If necessary, you can update your primary email address through your Mozilla account settings.
Next, simply click the Export HTML file button. You will receive a confirmation message indicating that your request has been processed, along with a link sent to your email to download a CSV file containing the URLs of your saved items.
Mozilla advises that this process may take anywhere from 24 hours to up to 7 days in certain cases. Be mindful that the link you receive will expire after 48 hours, so it’s wise to check your spam folder if the export email doesn’t appear in your inbox. Should you need to request a new link, simply repeat the same steps.
There’s no need for users to delete their accounts or data, as Mozilla will handle this after October 8. However, once you’ve successfully exported your saves, you will need to manually uninstall the app and browser extension. Monthly renewals for Pocket Premium have been halted immediately, while annual subscribers will receive a prorated refund following the July 8 shutdown.
Though Pocket has been a leading name in the read-it-later app space, it is not the only option available. A variety of alternatives are ready to welcome users seeking new platforms for their reading needs.
