In a recent appearance at IGN Live, Takashi Iizuka, head of Sonic Team, unveiled exciting details about the upcoming Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. This new title promises to be a thrilling crossover kart racing experience, featuring a roster that includes fan-favorites like Hatsune Miku, Ichiban Kasuga from Like a Dragon, Joker from Persona 5, and characters from Minecraft such as Steve, Alex, and the Creeper.
Innovative Gameplay Mechanics
With the game’s reveal just a day prior at Summer Game Fest, Iizuka shared insights into the creative process behind selecting guest characters. “We wanted to ensure that the second lap would be filled with surprises as players venture into worlds they never imagined,” he explained. The concept of exploring various Sega IP worlds, alongside unexpected franchises, was central to the game’s development. “We thought Minecraft and its characters could add a fun twist,” he added.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds introduces a unique three-lap racing format. The first lap follows a traditional racing style, but the racer in first place has the opportunity to select a new world for the subsequent lap using Travel Rings. “This three-lap formula is easy to grasp and keeps the excitement alive,” Iizuka noted. “We aimed to make each lap feel fresh and engaging, which led to the idea of the Travel Ring, transporting players to new and uncharted territories in the second lap.” Additionally, surprises await in the third lap, ensuring that the racing experience remains dynamic.
Exciting Power-Ups and Features
As the conversation shifted to in-game items, Iizuka expressed enthusiasm for the homage paid to previous Sonic Racing titles through the inclusion of the Rocket Punch item and Wisp items from Team Sonic Racing. However, his personal favorite is the Monster Truck power-up, which allows players to transform their vehicles into monster trucks, enabling them to bulldoze through competitors.
Scheduled for release on September 25, 2025, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds offers a plethora of features to look forward to. Players can expect the return of hoverboards from Sonic Riders, the flexibility for any character to ride any vehicle, online racing for up to 12 players, and the highly anticipated cross-play functionality.
This exciting title will be available on multiple platforms, including PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Notably, players on the upcoming Switch 2 will also have the opportunity to join the race alongside over 23 featured characters.
