Matt Firor steps down as ZeniMax Online studio boss

ZeniMax Online Studios is undergoing a significant transition as president Matt Firor announces his departure after an impressive 18-year tenure. In a heartfelt message shared on Twitter, Firor expressed his gratitude for the journey, stating that he will be stepping down from his leadership role.

Leadership Transition

Taking the reins from Firor will be a seasoned leadership team comprised of studio head Jo Burba, executive producer Susan Kath, and game director Rich Lambert. This trio has been instrumental in shaping some of the most notable expansions and ideas for the acclaimed Elder Scrolls Online. Firor conveyed his confidence in their ability to continue the legacy of the game, emphasizing their collective experience and commitment.

“Together, this leadership team has spearheaded many of Elder Scrolls Online‘s biggest ideas and expansions and will continue to make this game something we’re all proud of,” Firor remarked. He also shared his intention to remain an enthusiastic supporter of the game, stating, “While I won’t be working on the game anymore, I will be cheering you on and adding to the thousands of hours I’ve already spent in-game.”

Challenges Ahead

This leadership change comes amidst a backdrop of restructuring at ZeniMax Online Studios, including the cancellation of an in-development MMO project, codenamed Blackbird. This decision aligns with a broader trend of layoffs and project closures occurring within Microsoft, the parent company of ZeniMax. Firor has been a pivotal figure at ZeniMax Online Studios since joining in 2007, and his departure marks the end of an era.

As the studio navigates these changes, Firor’s legacy will undoubtedly influence the direction of Elder Scrolls Online and its dedicated community. He leaves behind a vibrant world filled with stories yet to be told and adventures waiting to unfold, confident that the community will continue to thrive and evolve.
