Update for Windows 11 brings more resilience (and Recall)

The optional update KB5062660 for Windows 11 version 24H2 is now available, bringing a suite of new features to enhance user experience. Among the most notable introductions is the rollout of Microsoft Recall in Europe.

Recall empowers users to export snapshots of their activities to trusted applications or websites. Upon first activation, a unique export code is generated, essential for decrypting these snapshots. This code is displayed only once and is not retained by Microsoft, ensuring user privacy. Users can easily manage this feature through the settings, where they will also find an option to reset Recall and remove all associated data.

The update further expands the Click to Do functionality, introducing a new action called Practice in Reading Coach. This feature is designed to help users enhance their reading skills and pronunciation. Additionally, selected texts can now be viewed in Immersive Reader, a distraction-free environment that allows for customizable reading settings.

Click to Do also in Teams

In a significant enhancement, users can now convert selected text directly into a draft using Draft with Copilot in Word, available to those with a Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription. Moreover, Click to Do has been integrated with Microsoft Teams, facilitating the sending of messages or scheduling of meetings directly from the platform.

The settings app will also feature an AI agent for Copilot+ PCs, designed to assist users in locating and modifying settings using natural language. This intelligent agent can automate actions with user consent, streamlining the user experience. For those on non-Copilot+ systems, the search bar in the settings app has been centered to improve accessibility.

As part of the Windows Resiliency Initiative, Microsoft is introducing rapid machine recovery options through the Windows Recovery Environment. This feature automatically identifies widespread issues and offers targeted solutions via Windows Update, with home users having this capability enabled by default. The interface for unexpected restarts has also been refreshed to align more closely with the Windows 11 aesthetic.

Improvements to the Start menu

Additional enhancements have been made to the Start menu, allowing system administrators to apply fixed pin settings just once. The snap functionality has received a more intuitive interface, complete with tips to prevent accidental activation. Furthermore, Windows Search settings have been consolidated into a single, clear page. For gamers, a new Gamepad keyboard layout has been introduced, which also facilitates PIN entry during login.

This update addresses various issues from previous versions, including bugs in File Explorer linked to SharePoint site synchronization and context menu operations. Other resolved issues pertain to system stability, input methods for traditional Chinese and Indian keyboards, visual glitches with desktop icons during app updates, and notifications failing to bring apps to the foreground.

Lastly, AI components have seen updates, including enhancements to Image Search, Content Extraction, and Semantic Analysis. The update also incorporates improvements to the Windows Servicing Stack via KB5064485. Microsoft has stated that there are currently no known issues associated with this update. As the rollout progresses, users may experience a gradual availability of these features.
