In a recent episode of Nightdive Studios’ Deep Dive podcast, Nate Wells, a seasoned artist known for his work on the iconic PC game System Shock 2, shared intriguing anecdotes from his creative journey. During a conversation with Nightdive’s Locke Vincent, Wells reflected on the unique artistic choices that shaped the game’s unsettling atmosphere, particularly the design of the alien entity known as The Many.

Artistic Inspirations and Unconventional Sources

Wells recounted a particularly amusing moment while developing The Many, which is characterized by its grotesque, biological aesthetic. “When we were working on The Many, if you remember, it has this very biological vibe to it. It’s this fleshy mass that has taken over the Rickenbacker,” he explained. This design choice created a stark contrast with the sterile, clinical corridors that players navigate throughout the game. The penultimate level offers a striking shift in tone, immersing players in the ever-expanding biomass of The Many.

One of the more unexpected sources of inspiration for the textures used in The Many came from an unlikely place: colonoscopy imagery. Wells humorously noted that the textures applied to the sphincter doors were reminiscent of this medical procedure, adding a layer of unsettling realism to the game. When comparing the original game’s walls and sphincter doors, he observed a glistening, veiny appearance that he found particularly appealing. While he expressed admiration for the remastered version, he acknowledged that some elements of the updated Body of the Many possess a distinct puckered quality that, while revolting, also carries a hint of whimsy.

As the conversation unfolded, it became clear that Wells’ creative process was not just about evoking fear but also about infusing a sense of playfulness into the horror. This balance between the grotesque and the whimsical is what continues to resonate with fans of System Shock 2, ensuring its place in the pantheon of classic PC gaming.
