The Files app on Windows 11 has recently undergone a significant update, now reaching version 3.9.14. This latest iteration introduces a new Signatures page within the properties window, allowing users to view digital signatures associated with files directly from the app. Previously, this functionality was exclusive to File Explorer, which required users to navigate through its Digital Signatures tab. While the Files app now offers this feature, it still utilizes the native Windows dialogue for detailed information.
File app for Windows 11 has just got a whole lot better
The addition of support for digital signatures is particularly beneficial for users concerned about file authenticity and security. This enhancement enables individuals to verify the source of certain file types and ascertain whether they have been altered before reaching their devices. For those who prioritize security, this update is a noteworthy advancement.
In addition to the new Signatures page, the update brings enhanced customization options to the Files app. The developers have introduced a dedicated Dual Pane setting on the General page within the app’s Settings, allowing users to easily locate and toggle this feature. The terminology has also been refined; the “Add pane” action is now referred to as “Split pane,” providing clearer guidance on its functionality.
Moreover, users will find two additional improvements in this version. The ability to resize columns in the Column View layout has been added, enabling users to adjust the width of columns by dragging the dividers. If a user wishes to revert to the default column sizes, a simple double-click on the divider will restore the original layout. Additionally, when conducting searches within the app, a header displaying the current query will now appear, enhancing the user experience.
It is important to note that version 3.9.14 of the Files app is currently available in preview mode. Users operating on the stable version will not have access to these new features unless they download the Files Preview app from the official website. This allows users to explore the latest enhancements while still maintaining their existing stable version on their PCs.
