The KakaoTalk app, a staple in the daily lives of millions in Korea, is poised to undergo a significant transformation as it ventures into the realm of social media. With aspirations to emulate the success of platforms like Instagram, KakaoTalk is set to introduce a story feed feature that will allow users to share snippets of their daily lives and engage with short-form videos.

During the company’s second quarter earnings call on August 7, CEO Chung Shin-a revealed plans to enhance the user experience by integrating a story feed directly into the contact list. This new feature will enable users to easily access updates from friends, including birthday announcements and multimedia content shared in group chats.

Enhancements to User Interface

The current user interface of KakaoTalk, which organizes contacts alphabetically, will soon evolve. Chung emphasized that the revamped profile function will provide a more dynamic and engaging experience. At the bottom of the contact tab, users will find a feed showcasing a variety of relationship-based content, fostering a sense of community among friends.

In a move reminiscent of Instagram Stories, users will be able to share and view photos and videos in a slideshow format, with updates disappearing after 24 hours. Additionally, a new section dedicated to short-form videos will be introduced, allowing users to create and consume content in a more interactive manner.

Chung noted that this short-form video service aims to diversify content sourcing channels while establishing a user-friendly studio for creators. The company plans to enhance both the quantity and quality of content available on the platform by focusing on exclusive offerings and original productions from Kakao’s affiliates.

The anticipated updates are expected to roll out by the end of the year, with a sneak peek scheduled for September at If Kakao, the company’s annual conference for IT developers. While details remain under wraps, the excitement surrounding these enhancements is palpable.

These developments come at a crucial time for KakaoTalk, as the company seeks to increase user engagement. Recent analytics indicate a decline in the average time users spend on the app, dropping from 822.7 minutes in May 2021 to 686 minutes in January of this year. By introducing these new features, Kakao aims to reignite user interest and foster a more vibrant community within its platform.
