Phison takes legal action over falsified ‘leaked’ document on Windows SSD issues — says it continues to investigate reports of problems

In a swift response to recent reports regarding an SSD issue linked to Windows 11, Phison has found itself in the midst of a controversy, necessitating a firm denial against a misleading document that has been circulating among its clientele. The company asserts that this document, which purports to summarize controller issues, is entirely fabricated.

Clarifying the Situation

Earlier this week, it was reported that a Microsoft security update for Windows 11 might be causing failures in SSDs during extensive file transfers. While it is true that some drives utilizing Phison NAND controllers are among those affected, Phison emphasizes that the problem is not exclusive to its technology, countering claims made in various reports.

In an official statement provided to Tom’s Hardware, Phison acknowledged the issue and confirmed that it is actively investigating the matter. The company is taking the situation seriously and is addressing the spread of the false document through appropriate legal channels.

The misleading document, titled “Phison SSD Controller Issues Summary,” claims to list affected controller models related to the ongoing issue. However, Phison has clarified that none of the information contained within this document is accurate or sanctioned by the company. The origins of this fictitious document remain unknown.

Phison reiterated its commitment to transparency, stating that its only official communication regarding the matter was released on August 19. In this statement, the company expressed awareness of the industry-wide impact of specific Windows updates, namely ‘KB5063878’ and ‘KB5062660,’ which may have affected various storage devices, including those supported by Phison.

  • “Phison has recently been made aware of the industry-wide effects of the ‘KB5063878’ and ‘KB5062660’ updates on Windows 11 that potentially impacted several storage devices, including some supported by Phison. We understand the disruption this may have caused and promptly engaged industry stakeholders. We are steadfast in our commitment to product integrity and the success of our partners and end users. At this time, the controllers that may have been affected are under review and we are working with partners. We will continue to provide updates and advisories to partners who may have been impacted to provide support and ensure any applicable remediation.”

As the situation unfolds, Phison remains dedicated to maintaining the trust of its customers and partners, ensuring that accurate information is disseminated amidst the noise of misinformation.
