Since its early access launch in January of last year, Enshrouded has captivated players with its expansive world of Embervale. While the game already allows for extensive terrain modification, many players have expressed a desire for water features to enhance their experience. This week at Gamescom, Keen Games unveiled an exciting update that promises to quench that thirst: a new biome dedicated entirely to water.
Introducing the Wake of the Water Update
During the event, attendees were treated to a trailer that showcased the new biome, which is far more intricate than mere rivers and ponds. I had the opportunity to witness a live demo and engage in a conversation with Benjamin Westphal, Enshrouded’s lead game designer, about the forthcoming Wake of the Water update, set to launch later this year.
Westphal described the new biome as a high-level area, indicating that it serves as the current endgame content. However, players need not worry about spending countless hours to encounter water features throughout the game. “Think about the desert,” he noted, suggesting that even in arid regions, players might stumble upon small oases. Additionally, players will have access to water at their bases, regardless of their location in the game world.
The demo revealed a thrilling aspect of the new biome: the potential dangers that come with water. Westphal demonstrated a scenario in which a trap sealed the doors of a dungeon, causing water to flood the room. Players must navigate this urgent situation, as their characters can only hold their breath for a limited time. Fortunately, Westphal emerged unscathed, a testament to his expertise as the lead designer.
In addition to the environmental changes, the new biome introduces a variety of new enemies, including a lizard-like race that players will encounter both on land and in the water. The sparkling lakes within the biome are teeming with fish, and while the fishing mechanics appear straightforward—cast a line and reel in your catch—there are layers of complexity. Players can experiment with different types of bait and fishing rods, as well as discover new recipes to cook their catches.
Moreover, the update promises progression in swimming mechanics, allowing players to enhance their underwater abilities, such as holding their breath longer and swimming faster. With the inclusion of fishing and the overall enhancements to gameplay, the Wake of the Water update is poised to reinvigorate interest in Enshrouded.
As a cherry on top, Enshrouded is currently available at a 20% discount on Steam until September 2, making it an opportune time for players to dive back into this immersive world.
