Your Android phone will soon be able to auto-open apps when installation completes

As users eagerly await the launch of new applications, Google is enhancing the experience for Android users with a new auto-open feature. This functionality, which allows apps to automatically open upon installation, is currently being rolled out across the platform.

Feature Overview

Those who have been following Google’s developments may recall that this feature was initially spotted in the latter half of last year. While it seemed to have faded from the spotlight, the auto-open toggle has resurfaced, ready to streamline the installation process.

Importantly, this feature is not activated by default, allowing users the flexibility to choose whether or not they wish to utilize it. During the installation process, users will find an option to toggle the auto-open feature on a per-app basis. This means that as you initiate the download or installation, you can easily enable the toggle from the same screen, eliminating the need for a manual launch once the app is ready.

The “Auto-open when ready” feature is rolling out more widely in the Google Play Store. This feature allows you to automatically open the app after it is installed. It is turned off by default and you see this option only when you hit the Install button.

It is worth noting that Google’s Pixel devices are receiving priority access to this toggle, reflecting the company’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the user experience on its own hardware. However, users should be aware that enabling the auto-open feature does not result in an immediate launch of the app upon installation completion. Instead, a five-second countdown timer is introduced, providing users with a brief moment to reconsider their choice.

While some may find the timer to be a minor inconvenience, the auto-open feature offers significant utility. For instance, during lengthy downloads—such as a large game installation—users might become distracted by other activities, like scrolling through social media. The notification and countdown serve as a gentle reminder that the download has finished, allowing users to either launch the app immediately or return to their previous distraction.

As the rollout continues, it remains uncertain whether the current design of the auto-open toggle will be the final iteration. Users may see further adjustments in the coming weeks or months, especially considering Google’s history of product updates and delays.
