Lindroid: Running Linux on Android devices
Lindroid is a new open source app that allows users to install a GNU/Linux distro on an Android device, enabling them to run Linux applications with full support for their phone’s hardware. This innovative solution works by placing Linux into a container and leveraging technologies like Halium to provide hardware-accelerated graphics and other hardware support on Android devices.
Developer Erfan Abdi describes Lindroid as a reverse Waydroid, an open source application that enables the running of Android apps on Linux devices, helping to bridge the app gap that affects mobile Linux distributions. However, not every Android device is compatible with Lindroid, as it requires rooting and certain patches to the Android Open Source Project code.
Abdi aims to simplify the installation process in the future by offering a Magisk module, making it as easy as installing an app on a rooted Android device. Alternatively, users can opt for LibreMobileOS, a privacy-focused minimal version of Android, with Lindroid support coming soon as part of the “ulumu” project.
Lindroid supports the installation of mobile-friendly Linux distributions such as Ubuntu Touch and Droidian, featuring user interfaces like Lomiri, Phosh, and Plasma Mobile. The app utilizes the KWin compositor by default, with experimental x11 support available. Additionally, Lindroid enables display output, allowing users to use an external monitor as a second screen for their Android/Linux phone.
According to a tweet by Erfan Abdi, Lindroid supports multi-display and multi-input functionalities, and is even compatible with Android desktop mode.
